2013 Commercial Vehicle Registrations Up Over 200%

Reading Time: 2 minutes

According to the latest news published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), this last year was undoubtedly massive for the commercial vehicle industry in the United Kingdom, especially in terms of growth.

The number of new commercial vehicle registrations is one of the clearest indicators of this booming trend and, according to the data released by the SMMT, new registrations boomed throughout 2013 with a sharp increase during the last month of the year.

As we take a closer look to the latest data sets that examine the industry’s performance over the past 12 months, we notice a whopping year-on-year increase in the number of commercial vehicle sales. The number of vehicles sold during 2013 was an impressive 237 per cent higher than during the previous year.

In fact, all the major commercial vehicle manufacturers reported large increases in the number of vehicles registered during 2013, with Renault, Scania, Mercedes Benz, MAN, Volvo, and Iveco reporting stellar triple-digit percentage growth.

However, the clear market leader was Dutch manufacturer Daf, which reported a 411 per cent increase in its number of truck registrations during December 2013. This means that of the 10,715 6-tonne trucks registered during that month, approximately one third were vehicles manufactured by Daf.

It is also worth mentioning the large increase in the number of articulated vehicle registrations, whose number grew by 32 per cent when compared to the figures for 2012. In total, more than 22,500 articulated commercial vehicles were registered during 2013.

The commercial vehicle market as a whole reached record performance levels last year, growing by 14.7 per cent and beating its performance over the last five years. The forecasts remain optimistic, as it is believed that new light commercial vans and Euro 6 trucks will bring additional growth to the market in 2014.
